Practice Update

Here is an update on a small selection of my matters from the last few years. It’s been a privilege to represent wonderful clients and a joy to work on such interesting and challenging matters.

You can see a comprehensive list of my cases in federal court since launching my solo practice here.

Copyright

  • I represent the heirs to a legendary Asian recording artist in a lawsuit concerning ownership rights to their musical catalog.

  • I represent the defendant in a copyright infringement lawsuit that complains about her consumer education YouTube channel’s video commenting on plaintiff’s business practices. Balabis v. Linga, C.D. Cal. case no. 2:23-cv-07850.

  • I represented an independent video game developer in a lawsuit by his former collaborator who claimed he owned part of my client’s successful indie game. After the court granted our motion for judgment on the pleadings, dismissing the copyright infringement and several other claims, the case settled. Rogers v. Petersen, N.D. Cal. case no. 3:23-cv-03281.

  • I have represented copyright owners in copyright infringement litigation against anonymous websites engaged in widespread piracy.

  • I represented the defendant in resolving a copyright infringement lawsuit relating to a photograph. Minden Pictures, Inc. v. Yardzen, Inc., N.D. Cal. case no. 3:24-cv-7387.

Commercial Disputes

  • I represent a software development company in a lawsuit for unpaid invoices against its startup client and its principal, who was also my client’s lawyer in negotiating the parties’ agreements. Koombea Inc. v. Joynup Inc., et al., San Francisco Superior Court case no. CGC-25-623361.

  • I represented a startup in responding to demand for money and part ownership from a former employee.

First Amendment

  • I persuaded the plaintiff in an out-of-state defamation lawsuit to withdraw its subpoena to Google seeking to identify my client, leveraging California's statute that protects anonymous speakers on the Internet from having their identities disclosed via subpoenas.

Miscellaneous

  • For the second time, I served as an expert witness on California law in a non-U.S. arbitration.
